Vietnamese Bamboo Buffalo Bells: A Unique Cultural ArtifacT

Hart’s selection of Autentic Buffalo Bells

“Life. It is a flash of fireflies in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the rice fields. It is as the little shadow that runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.”

Buffalo Bells are an integral part of Vietnamese folklore and have been used for centuries in daily life and in various Ceremonies and Rituals.

Bamboo Buffalo Bells were first used by the Vietnamese people during the feudal period, which lasted from the 10th to the 19th century. At that time, buffalo played a crucial role in agriculture, and the Bells were used to keep track of the animals as they roamed the fields.

When a Water Buffalo wears a Bamboo Bell, it becomes a walking symphony. The gentle swaying of the Bell creates a soothing melody that resonates through the fields, bringing a sense of tranquillity to both the animal and its surroundings. It is believed that this melodious sound wards off Evil Spirits and brings good luck to the farmers and their crops.

Hart’s Lucky Buffalo Bell

During the Vietnam War, Bamboo Buffalo Bells took on a new significance. The Bells were used by the Viet Cong to signal attacks and to communicate with each other in the jungle. Today, Bamboo Buffalo Bells are still used in Vietnam, both for practical purposes and as a symbol of Cultural Heritage.
